Surfing

Arugam Bay, located on the east side of Sri Lanka is the most sought after destination in Sri Lanka for surfing. Arugam Bay was active even during the long forgotten civil war and is the place to be for ardent surfers who patronize it from around the world. Today, it is simply a sub- culture that is revolved around surfing, and respected with aplomb by amateurs and professional alike. Arugam Bay and its surrounding areas are patronized not only by surfing aficionados but by hoards to revellers who simply adore in being part of the surf culture, which really took off some 30 years ago. Most material written about Arugam Bay will credit it as one of the top ten surf points in the world. Although Arugam Bay is visited round the year the best time to indulge in one’s fancy is between May and November when the predominant wind is off-shore for at least the first half of the day.

Due to its location and southerly swell direction the area is marked by right hand point breaks. As said in surfers parlance there is a beach break which can be fun for body surfing or for beginners but the buck stops there as the three of the point breaks "The Point", "Pottuvil Point" and "Crocodile Rock" are blessed with sky scrapper waves to the delight of the hard core surfers. Our staff will be more than to happy to help you plan surf trips to some of the lesser known breaks as well to make your visit to Arugam Bay memorable.
